I, Robot
Submitted by scott on Wed, 07/15/2009 - 11:03pm.I finished reading I,Robot by Cory Doctorow. I love that he put a bunch of his material up with the Creative Commons license. This one I downloaded from Feedbooks. Being a fan of Asimov this story was kind of funny to read.
You can buy the story as part of a collection called Overclocked.

Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said
Submitted by scott on Thu, 07/02/2009 - 8:11pm.I finished reading Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said by Philip K. Dick. This book is a little too weird for me. I was having a really hard time following the story line until it was pulled together near the end. It really should have had some kind of connector near the beginning so I wasn't just trying to figure out what was going on for most of the book. This was another one I picked up at the library.
I need to get back into some science fiction sagas.

Brothers in Arms
Submitted by scott on Thu, 07/02/2009 - 8:03pm.I finished reading Brothers in Arms by Lois McMaster Bujold. I picked this one up at the library and didn't realize it was part of a series. So I started this in the middle of the series so I missed a little bit of back story but overall it was OK. I probably wont be reading the others in this series.

His Illegal Self
Submitted by scott on Tue, 06/16/2009 - 11:07pm.I just finished reading His Illegal Self by Peter Carey. I wasn't really that into this book. Again not really my style but like anything, I like to try different things just in case I might actually like it.

Merrano of the Dry Country
Submitted by scott on Tue, 06/16/2009 - 11:02pm.I read the short story Merrano of the Dry Country by Louis L'Amour. It is not really my style of story but it did have a few interesting parts. Mostly it just made me mad at the bigots depicted in the story.

Shadow Puppets
Submitted by scott on Tue, 06/16/2009 - 10:46pm.I finished reading Shadow Puppets by Orson Scott Card. I've read all of these books out of order so this is just another that I need to fit into the right order in my brain. This is part of the Bean series derived from the Ender's Game series.

The Universe in a Single Atom
Submitted by scott on Sun, 05/17/2009 - 1:47pm.I just finished listening to The Universe in a Single Atom: The Convergence of Science and Spirituality by His Holiness The Dalai Lama. The book gives an interesting look into the Buddhist faith and their outlook on the use of science within the religion. I would love to attend one of the Mind & Life Conferences that are talked about in the book (http://www.mindandlife.org) just to listen in on all the talks. I think my lack of a Ph.D. in some cognitive science would preclude be from being invited.

iPhone Sales Script
Submitted by scott on Wed, 05/13/2009 - 12:43am.This is the script I developed to download my daily sales numbers from iTunes Connect. I got tired of logging into the server every day to see how sales were so I wrote the script and stuck it in a cron job to run every morning. The standard output of the script is trapped by cron and sent as an email. You can also just run this on the command line in Terminal.
To use this script you need to do the following:

Into the Wild
Submitted by scott on Sun, 05/10/2009 - 10:46am.I finished reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. I had watched the movie before reading the book so it was a little interesting to see how much they invented in the movie. I would have to agree with the many letters referenced in the book about how unprepared Chris (aka Alex) was for the Alaska wilderness. At a minimum I would have brought a compass, map, GPS, and emergency beacon. While he did survive for an extraordinarily long time, he would have easily walked out of there had he done some basic preparation.
